Critics accuse FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr of wielding regulatory power to advance a conservative agenda, raising concerns about media independence.

The Federal Communications commission (FCC) is facing scrutiny over accusations that Commissioner Brendan Carr is using his position to promote a conservative agenda, perhaps compromising the independence of media organizations.
Critics point to several instances where Carr, a known supporter of former President DONALD TRUMP, has allegedly exerted influence over media companies, leading to concerns about political interference in regulatory decisions.
One instance cited involves a complaint filed against FOX affiliates and the MURDOCHS by the Media and democracy Project, co-founded by JONATHAN REISS. while former FCC Chair JESSICA ROSENWORCEL dismissed the complaint, CARR reopened similar complaints against ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates shortly after assuming his role. REISS’s complaint, however, remained dismissed, despite being based on similar public interest standards.
Commissioner ANNA GOMEZ voiced concerns about these actions, stating, “I am concerned that this is a clear attempt to weaponize our licensing authority, to instill fear in broadcast stations and influence a network’s editorial decisions.”
Accusations extend beyond the handling of complaints. CARR is also accused of pressuring companies to align with the TRUMP agenda.
Allegations of Coercion and Influence
Following CARR’s alleged threat to stall the Paramount/CBS merger with Skydance, Paramount reportedly settled a $16 million lawsuit with TRUMP, and the merger proceeded. DAVID ELLISON, a billionaire TRUMP ally and owner of CBS’s new parent company, allegedly pledged to CARR to eliminate diversity initiatives at CBS and installed a conservative ombudsman.
“I am concerned that this is a clear attempt to weaponize our licensing authority…and influence a network’s editorial decisions.”
CARR also initiated investigations into NPR and PBS, public broadcasters frequently enough criticized by conservatives for alleged liberal bias.
The FCC’s actions have been particularly notable in the case of Disney/ABC. After allegedly paying TRUMP for defamation claims made by news anchor GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC faced further pressure when CARR threatened FCC action against JIMMY KIMMEL’s show. Subsequently, Nexstar and Sinclair Broadcast Group, which own numerous local ABC affiliates, announced thay would pull KIMMEL’s show, leading ABC to comply.
Concerns Over Media Consolidation
Critics argue that CARR’s actions are contributing to media consolidation, favoring billionaire TRUMP allies and undermining autonomous media outlets. The FCC is reportedly considering removing restrictions on TV station ownership, potentially allowing right-wing networks like Sinclair to expand their dominance.
This potential shift raises concerns about the diversity of information available to the public and the potential for biased reporting.
