Brazil Nursing Home Collapse: 12 Dead

At least twelve people were killed when a nursing home collapsed in Brazil. Eight other people were rescued alive by the emergency services, including a two-year-old boy, the fire department announced today.

The four-story building in the megacity of Belo Horizonte in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais collapsed yesterday morning (local time). The cause is unclear.

Also apartments in buildings

At the time of the accident, according to the fire department, 29 people were in the four-story building, which also contained apartments and a beauty clinic. Nine people were able to save themselves or with the help of neighbors.

The fire department initially put the number of deaths at eight. At this point, more than 40 firefighters with sniffer dogs were still searching the rubble for four missing people. Their bodies were later found. An investigation was launched into the cause of the collapse. According to the fire department, the building had all the necessary permits.
