Miami (USA), Jun 25 (EFE) .- The classification of Fluminense to the round of 16 of the Club World Cup, after the draw this Wednesday against South African Mamelodi Slowns, certified the plenary of the Brazilian teams in the next round, after a group stage in which they have touched the undefeated.
Fluminense finished second of group F behind Borussia Dortmund, before which he signed a draw on the initial day. The 0-0 against Mamelodi made him lose the first place on the last day.
Next to him have classified Palmeiras, Flamengo and Botafogo, the other three representatives of Brazil in this competition. Palmeiras and Flamengo closed their groups as leaders, without defeats, and ahead of a European team (Porto and Chelsea respectively) that ‘a priori’ could sound as a favorite.
Botafogo, meanwhile, did it as a second. Only his defeat in the last game against Atlético de Madrid prevented the end of group B and that this place ended up being from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
That defeat of the Botafogo against the Madrid team is still the only struggle of Brazil’s teams so far in Club World Cup. In twelve games they have added six victories, five draws and one defeat.
Among those victories are some of great prestige, such as the 1-0 of Botafogo al PSG, current European champion, or the 3-1 Flamengo al Chelsea.
Fruit of this success, Brazil is the only country that has assured its representation in the quarterfinals of the tournament, due to the crossroads between Palmeiras and Botafogo -next Sunday in Philadelphia.
Flamengo, meanwhile, will have to deal with Bayern Munich on June 29 in Miami. The leadership of the Group came with an poisoned gift.
Meanwhile, Fluminense will have to wait for tonight to meet his rival in the eighth. The only sure thing is that it will be the first classified in Group E and that it will leave the Inter Milan trio, River Plate and Monterrey.
Brazil was the country that arrived with more representatives to the Club World Cup. All of them agreed as champions of the Copa Libertadores in the last four years, and their good role in this tournament only reaffirm the quality of the Brazilian League.
It should be remembered that the Brazilian Corinthians was the last non -European team to win the Club World Cup -in its old format. He did it after defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the 2013 final played in Japan.
