Lula Responds to US Trade Measures

During a press conference in Tokyo, concluding his state visit to Japan, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asserted that Brazil “cannot remain motionless” in the face of recently imposed steel tariffs by the United States. These tariffs, enacted by the Trump administration, have sparked considerable debate and concern within the Brazilian government.

Potential WTO Challenge and Reciprocal Tariffs

Lula emphasized that Brazil is actively considering challenging the 25% tariff on steel imports through the WTO. He also raised the possibility of implementing reciprocal tariffs on American goods entering Brazil. We have two options: one is to resort to the WTO, which we are going to do, and the other is to impose taxes on the American products that we import. That is,apply the reciprocity law,Lula told reporters.

This stance reflects a broader trend of nations re-evaluating trade relationships in response to protectionist policies. As of the latest data, global trade disputes have increased by 15% in the last year, highlighting the growing tension in international commerce.

Brazil’s Position in the Global Steel Market

Brazil held the position of the second-largest steel exporter to the United states in 2024, shipping approximately 4 million tons, only surpassed by Canada. While Lula initially promised “reciprocity” following trump’s tariff declaration in February, his Finance Minister afterward advocated for a more measured response, urging calm.

Lula has voiced concerns that the protectionist measures adopted by the US government could ultimately harm the american economy itself. Trump needs to measure the consequences of his decisions, such as inflation, he stated, suggesting a potential for unintended economic repercussions.

Mercosur Trade negotiations and International Economic Surroundings

Beyond the immediate trade dispute with the US, Lula addressed the ongoing trade negotiations between the South American trade bloc Mercosur—comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay—and Japan. He expressed optimism that formal discussions for a free trade agreement would commence in the latter half of the year.

In December 2024,Mercosur nations finalized a trade agreement with the European Union, which is currently awaiting ratification. Lula has emphasized the importance of forging new trade alliances in response to an increasingly protectionist global economic landscape.

Bolsonaro’s Legal Troubles: Lula Calls for Justice

In addition to trade matters, President Lula addressed the legal proceedings initiated against his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro. The First Chamber of the supreme Federal Court (STF) unanimously approved the accusation presented by the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR).

Lula’s Stance on Bolsonaro’s Trial

I just hope justice is done. If he (Bolsonaro) is innocent, to declare him innocent. If it is indeed guilty, that thay punish him, Lula stated. He has no way to prove that he is innocent. Everyone knows what happened. He also knows what he did.

The STF has decided to prosecute Bolsonaro for allegedly orchestrating a plan to overturn the results of the 2022 elections, which he lost to Lula, and to obstruct the democratic transfer of power. Several of Bolsonaro’s former associates, including ministers and high-ranking military officers, will also face trial.

Charges Against Bolsonaro and Allies

The eight individuals accused face charges related to five distinct crimes, including: violent abolition of the democratic state of law, coup attempt, integration in armed criminal organization, qualified damage, and protected heritage deterioration. The charges stem from actions such as the January 8, 2023, attacks on government buildings in Brasilia.

Criticism of bolsonaro’s Claims of Political Persecution

Lula has criticized Bolsonaro’s attempts to discredit the judicial process by alleging political motivations on the part of the judges. Now he is saying that they chase him. What you should do is demonstrate your innocence instead of asking amnesty, Lula remarked, drawing a parallel to his own exclusion from the 2018 elections.

Brazilians need to know that the Supreme Court is fulfilling its role, the president concluded, underscoring the importance of judicial independence and accountability.
