Brand Crisis: Late Pay & Top Producer Exit?

by Archynetys News Desk

The largest Slovak furniture manufacturer is fighting for survival. The employees of Decodom in Topoľčany are sitting at home on forced vacations, their salaries are late and the company is fighting for survival. The management is negotiating with investors about rescue, but at the same time it faces a debt to the Social Insurance Company in the amount of almost 362,000 euros and problems with the supply of materials.

Aktuality.sk drew attention to this. “We have nothing to do at the moment. There are maybe 120 people at home today, they are ordered to spend their holidays. I don’t think there will be anyone here next week because no material has arrived. Nobody knows what is going on.” said one of the employees for the portal last week.

Decodom’s temporary CEO Ivan Kopanický confirmed that the company is indeed facing problems and that in December it paid employees twice. However, he claims that they proceeded in accordance with the employment contracts, since the payment deadline is by the end of the month. He called the payment of February wages a priority and for now he sees no reason why employees should not receive the money on time and in full.

At the same time, Kopanický said on Wednesday that the management of Decodom actually ordered the employees to take time off. “The situation is not easy, and given that we are a small open economy, it is even more difficult for us. Consolidation measures are not helping us either.” he admitted.

They are negotiating with investors, employees are tense

Kopanický also confirmed that Decodom is negotiating with several investors. According to one of the employees, there should be three interested parties and the sale of the company should be closed by the end of February. The management does not want to comment on the details, as it has signed confidentiality agreements with potential partners.

The tension between the workers is growing. They claim that their management informed them about the threat of bankruptcy already in November last year. For October and November, they received a salary without the variable component, which is approximately nine percent of the income. They were reassured when they finally received the movable component for December.

“I’m writing to you on behalf of several factory workers. We have young children, we have mortgages and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. We’re sick of the way things work here.” one of the employees complained. Another employee pointed out that many employees had to tap into their savings accounts to make mortgage payments.

Complaints also come from customers

Delayed payments to material suppliers slowed down production and the situation was also reflected externally. Complaints about long delivery times appeared on the Internet. Some customers have reported waiting months for the furniture they ordered. “Before Christmas, there was a promotion for delivery before the holidays, but we didn’t have the material. People canceled orders, we had to give them discounts so that they could buy the kitchens at all.” however, another of the workers stated.

Kopanický confirmed that they had to re-establish cooperation with some suppliers and deliveries slowed down, but he described the situation as more or less stabilized. Decodom already experienced a similar crisis during the pandemic in 2020, when it was threatened with massive job losses. After the reorganization, the company managed to stabilize. Today, however, it faces another test, and the next period will show in which direction the company will move.
