Franz Jörg Richter: Cycling Across Continents to support Families Affected by Rare Diseases

Published: | By Archynetys News

For over six decades, franz Jörg Richter’s life has revolved around cycling. What began as childhood memories on his father’s bike has evolved into a lifelong passion and a powerful mission: raising funds and awareness for children and families grappling with rare diseases. With over 70,000 kilometers already under his belt, Richter’s journey is far from over.

A Lifelong Journey on two Wheels

Richter’s connection with cycling began in his early childhood. He fondly recalls being a passenger on his father’s bicycle. At the age of nine, a pivotal moment occurred when he received a documentary travelogue, “by bike around the world”, for Christmas in 1969. This ignited a dream within him to embark on his own adventurous cycling tours across the globe.

From Personal Loss to Philanthropic Mission

After graduating and studying sports in Cologne, Richter pursued cycling competitively. However, a profound turning point reshaped his outlook. The unexpected deaths of two close friends led him to find a deeper purpose in cycling. He embarked on extensive tours across Europe and America, and his mission gradually took shape: to collect donations for children and families affected by rare diseases, offering them much-needed financial assistance.

Rare diseases, often affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. (as defined by the National Association for Rare Disorders), present unique challenges. Families often face delayed diagnoses, limited treatment options, and meaningful financial burdens.Richter’s efforts directly address these critical needs.

achievements and Future Endeavors

To date, Franz Jörg Richter has completed twelve major cycling tours, raising over 40,000 euros for his cause. In 2018,he realized a long-held dream by cycling from San Francisco to New York. His experiences from this journey are chronicled in his book, “Happy Coincidence,” which is now available.

Looking ahead, Richter is preparing for his next project: a Tour de France in the summer. He aims to continue raising awareness for rare diseases, highlighting the challenges faced by affected children and their families, who often experiance significant delays in diagnosis due to the rarity of their conditions.
