“We’ll always be a band called Boyzone. But we’ll never be a band again, I don’t think we’ll ever make music again”

Shane Filan, the 48-year-old former lead singer of Boyzone, has opened up about his feelings regarding the brand-new Sky Documentaries programme titled Boyzone: No Matter What, airing on ITV’s Lorraine. While reflecting on the three-part series that explores the band’s early years, Shane candidly stated, “It’s not our territory as a world anymore.”

A Tale of Emotional Reflection

Shane shared his thoughts while discussing the documentary with step-in host Ranvir Singh during an episode of Lorraine. Ranvir commented, “I saw the three hours of it yesterday, it takes you on an enormous journey. I cried.” Filan echoed these sentiments, admitting, “Me too.”

The Making of ‘No Matter What’

The documentary features Shane, Keith Duffy, Stephen Gately, Ronan Keating, and Mikey Graham, all members of the boyband that rose to fame in the early 1990s. The series, which airs at the start of February, is directed by Sophie Curious and culminates in a deep, often dark, examination of the members’ pasts.

Filan praised the documentary team’s efforts, stating, “The girl who got the best out of us, Sophie, she was amazing for just us trusting in her. The guys in Curious, the guys who put the doc together, it’s not a fluffy pop doc by any means.” He described his emotional journey through the documentary, sharing, “I learned so much about them boys, watching this, more than I’d ever had living with them for the past 30 years as such.”

A Change in Dynamics

While reflecting on the documentary’s emotional impact, Filan commented on the possibility of a Boyzone reunion. “No, and I say this in the greatest respect. We’ll always be a band called Boyzone. But we’ll never be a band again. We’ve been there and done it. But to share a stage together, we’d be more than up for it,” he declared. However, he added, “It’s a little night of fun, night on the town for everybody else, including us.”

The Evolution of Boyzone

The documentary also sheds light on the personal battles and challenges faced by the band members. Mikey Graham, the original lead singer of Boyzone, discussed his struggles after being sidelined in favor of Ronan Keating and Stephen Gately. Graham explained, “I was upset about it at the time, I tried to convey that but it fell upon deaf ears.”

The documentary delves into Graham’s psychological journey, stating, “It was a hard struggle for me through the years. My confidence that I had beforehand about music fell through the floor.” Graham described the band’s promotional strategies as “heartbreaking,” especially his experiences with Louis Walsh, the band’s manager, who cut ties with Graham for reasons unknown to him.

Walsh’s reaction to the documentary, however, was different. He clarified, “I probably ignored him a little bit, not realising… but it was because the others were so full on I thought he was happy being Michael and being the quiet one at the back.”

The Legacy of Boyzone

Despite the personal challenges and dramatic ups and downs, Boyzone remains a symbol of nostalgia for millions of fans around the world. Shane Filan’s comments underscore the evolving nature of the band’s legacy, stating that while they may never make music together again, the idea of a Boyzone reunion is one they still warm to.

The documentary, Boyzone: No Matter What, set to debut in February, promises to be a deeply personal and revealing look into one of the world’s most iconic boybands. As fans revisit the monumental journey Boyzone took together, the legacy of Shane, Keith, Stephen, Ronan, and Mikey Graham remains unshaken.
