Eyewitness Account

Marion Tourgon, a French tourist, provided a statement to the inquest, recounting the moment she witnessed the boy’s fall.At approximately 1:45 PM,while taking a selfie with her family near the cliff edge, she saw the young boy slip in a puddle.

According to MS. Tourgon, the boy’s right foot slipped, and he struggled to regain his balance. She described how he ended up in an “awkward position” with his left foot over the cliff edge. Despite attempts to grasp the grass, he lost his footing and fell. MS. Tourgon immediately contacted emergency services.

During the inquest, MS. Huang asked, “what exactly caused Zhihan to fall from the Cliffs?” Insp. Helen Costello responded, “It appears from the witness that he slipped into the void having stumbled in the puddle.”

Recovery Efforts and Findings

Police officer Colm Collins testified that he received a call reporting the incident at 2 PM. The Irish Coast Guard located a body in the water below the cliffs. However, rough sea conditions initially prevented a lifeboat from reaching the site. Zhihan’s body was eventually recovered by a fisherman five days later,on July 28.

A post-mortem examination determined that Zhihan died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height. Coroner O’Dea concluded that the death was accidental, stating, “It is indeed clear from evidence we heard that Zhihan slipped off the Cliffs rather than any other way. His death would have been very rapid – instantaneous.”

Addressing MS. Huang, O’Dea said, “I can’t imagine how upsetting this is for you” and “The pain must be immeasurable for you all.”
