In a stunning upset at the Club World Cup, Botafogo defeated Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by a score of 1-0.The match, held on Thursday night, marked the second game for each club in the tournament.

Igor Jesus netted the decisive goal late in the first half, securing the victory for the South American champions.Botafogo maintained their led through a tense second half, earning them the top spot in their group with six points.

Despite not having lost a match since May 3, PSG appeared fatigued at the Rose Bowl in front of a crowd of 53,699.

The goal by Igor Jesus in the 36th minute was the first goal conceded by PSG as May 17, when they defeated Atlético Madrid 4-0 in Pasadena.

Prior to this match, the French powerhouse had dominated their opponents, outscoring them 12-0 in their last three games, which included victories in the French Cup and the Champions League final.

Botafogo became the first team to prevent PSG from scoring since Liverpool’s 1-0 victory in the Champions League back in March. Before Thursday’s loss, the French team had scored in 19 consecutive matches.

“Every team is motivated, especially against our team,” PSG coach Luis Enrique said. “Our team struggled against their defense. I think Botafogo is one of the toughest defensive teams in the tournament.”

Botafogo coach Renato Paiva commented on his team’s victory, stating that they had beaten PSG at their own game.

“Being a great team, playing together, all the guys defending, all the guys attacking, and that’s the big secret of this PSG team, that’s why they compete and win,” he said.

“They are a fantastic team. I said this, PSG are a lesson to everybody nowadays in football.And I told my guys, just be a team, enjoy playing together, attack together, defend together, and enjoy. And they did they did it. Fantastic.”

Ousmane Dembélé, a Ballon d’Or contender, was absent for PSG due to a quadriceps injury.Despite his absence and coach Luis Enrique’s rotation of the starting lineup, PSG maintained possession for much of the first half.

The turning point came with Igor Jesus’s individual effort. The Brazilian striker is reportedly set to join Nottingham Forest next season.

PSG had a total of 16 shot attempts compared to Botafogo’s four. However, all four of Botafogo’s shots were on target, while PSG only managed to get two on net.

igor Jesus received a long pass from Jefferson Savarino, skillfully evaded two defenders, and scored past Gianluigi Donnarumma. He then celebrated with Botafogo’s fans.

PSG lacked their usual cohesive play, but Luis Enrique’s team remains in a good position to advance as they prepare to face MLS’ Sounders in seattle on Monday.

Thousands of Brazilian fans traveled to celebrate Botafogo’s victory. The club will face Atlético on Monday at the Rose Bowl with a chance to advance from their group.

With Brazil’s four teams remaining unbeaten so far in the 32-club tournament, Paiva highlighted the strength of Brazilian soccer.

“I think it’s the quality of Brazilian players, the quality of what people are doing in Brazil, especially the coaches,” he said.

“Brazil will always be Brazil in world football.”
