The city of BOSTON is currently undergoing a recount of votes after Domingos DaRosa, a mayoral candidate, requested a review of the preliminary election results. This action follows the withdrawal of Josh Kraft from the race, creating an opening for DaRosa to potentially secure a spot on the November ballot.
The recount process began after Kraft withdrew from the mayoral race, despite incumbent Mayor Michelle Wu winning a vast majority of the city’s precincts. DaRosa, after learning his name wouldn’t automatically appear on the general election ballot, initiated the recount process.
In BOSTON, a mayoral candidate needs 3,000 votes in the preliminary election to be on the November ballot. According to unofficial tallies, DaRosa received 2,409 votes.
“I want folks to see that the underdog is still in the fight,” DaRosa told the Globe.
To trigger the recount, DaRosa had to gather at least 50 signatures from each ward within a six-day period. The effort to reach the 3,000-vote threshold requires securing 600 votes from specific wards.
inside City Hall, election workers and volunteers are diligently working through the recount process.
“How do you get the community to get involved if you only show two individuals?” he said. “The recount is to show the full process of what it entails to be a candidate.”
“This is what democracy is all about,”
The recount is expected to continue for several days.
