BNPT and Ministry of Communication Collaborate to Eradicate Extremist Content Online in 2024
Jakarta – The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs have taken significant steps to combat the spread of radicalism and extremism by removing over 180,000 pieces of social media content in 2024.
Majority of Removed Content Linked to Terrorist Organizations
According to Eddy Hartono, head of the BNPT, the items of content removed were associated with various terrorist groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), and Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT).
Hartono shared, “The majority of the removed content was dominated by propaganda from terror networks affiliated with ISIS, HTI, JAT, and JAD.”
Platforms Where Extremist Content was Most Prevalent
The social media platforms seeing the highest number of extremist content removals were Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Specifically, 86,203 items were taken down from Instagram, followed by 45,449 from Facebook, and 23,595 from TikTok.
Other platforms where extremist content was removed include X (formerly known as Twitter), WhatsApp, Telegram, and various online media outlets. Detailed figures show that 9,535 items were taken from X, 8,506 from WhatsApp, 4,751 from Telegram, and 3 from online media platforms.
Telegram as a Platform of Concern
Telegram was highlighted by Hartono as a platform frequently used by extremist groups to disseminate propaganda.
“Monitoring and removing content on this platform is crucial as per Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism, which punishes those planning evil acts,” Hartono emphasized.
Identifying Vulnerable Regions Remains Confidential
In an effort to prevent radicalization, the BNPT has identified regions prone to radicalism and terrorism. However, these specific regions remain undisclosed due to confidentiality reasons.
“These are for ourselves to take preventive measures. We have the data on regions considered vulnerable,” Hartono explained.
