Coastal regions and maritime operators across Indonesia are being urged to prepare for potentially hazardous sea conditions, as the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued warnings for high waves expected between June 4th and 7th, 2025.
The primary concern involves elevated wave heights that could pose risks to shipping and other marine activities in several Indonesian waterways.
Eko Prasetyo, the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Director, stated on Wednesday that atmospheric conditions and wind patterns around the archipelago are contributing to the increased wave heights, potentially endangering maritime safety.
“The wind pattern in northern Indonesia generally moves from southwest to northwest with a speed of 6-30 knots, while in southern Indonesia moves from northeast to southeast with a speed of 6-25 knots,” Prasetyo said in his statement.
The agency has identified the North Natuna Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, the Banda Sea, and the North Pacific Ocean off Maluku as areas where the highest wind speeds have been recorded. These conditions are expected to generate waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters in height.
Areas at Risk
the BMKG has specified several regions where waves could reach between 1.25 and 2.5 meters:
- North Malacca Strait
- West Indian Ocean of Aceh
- Banda Sea
- Arafuru Sea
- North Pacific Ocean Papua, West papua and Maluku
“the wind pattern in northern indonesia generally moves from southwest to northwest with a speed of 6-30 knots…”
Furthermore, even higher waves, ranging from 2.5 to 4.0 meters, are anticipated in the following areas:
- West Indian Ocean Bengkulu and Lampung
- Waters south of Banten
- Waters south of Java
- Waters south of Bali
- Waters south of Nusa Tenggara
BMKG’s Appeal
The BMKG is urging coastal communities and all those involved in marine activities to exercise caution and remain vigilant due to the potential for these high waves.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What should I do if I live in a coastal area affected by high wave warnings?
- stay informed about the latest weather updates from BMKG and local authorities. Secure your property, move valuables to higher ground, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
- How can maritime operators prepare for high wave conditions?
- Check weather forecasts before setting sail, ensure your vessel is properly equipped, and consider postponing travel if conditions are too hazardous. Monitor wave conditions and adjust your course as needed.
- What causes high waves in Indonesia?
- High waves in Indonesia are typically caused by strong winds, monsoonal patterns, and specific geographical factors that amplify wave heights in certain areas.
