Steyr-based business software powerhouse BMD continues its upward trajectory, reporting notable sales figures and outlining ambitious expansion plans.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
BMD, a prominent business software producer headquartered in Steyr, Austria, has announced a critically important leap in its financial performance. For the fiscal year 2024/25 (ending in March), the company reported sales of €97 million, marking an 8% increase compared to the previous year. According to Managing Director Markus Knasmüller, this puts BMD “directly attempting to the EUR 100 million” mark. The company also noted that the first month of the new financial year saw the largest order input in BMD’s history, signaling continued momentum.
Strategic Acquisitions for Expansion
To further fuel its growth, BMD is actively pursuing strategic acquisitions, primarily targeting smaller companies within German-speaking countries. This approach allows BMD to expand its market presence without engaging in costly bidding wars with international competitors. Knasmüller emphasized that the Austrian software industry is experiencing a “complete sale,” making domestic acquisitions less appealing due to high competition and inflated prices.
This strategic approach aligns with the broader trend of consolidation within the software industry. According to a recent report by Gartner, mergers and acquisitions in the software sector are expected to increase by 15% in 2025, driven by the need for companies to expand their product portfolios and geographic reach.
In Austria, BMD anticipates that the government’s new tax legislation, part of a broader savings package, will positively impact its business. Knasmüller described the legislation as “an avalanche” that will drive demand for business software solutions, especially in areas such as accounting and tax compliance.
Employee Growth and Geographic Reach
BMD aims to maintain a steady growth rate, targeting a 10% increase in sales and a 5% increase in its workforce. currently, the company employs 824 people in Austria, with 600 based at its Steyr headquarters. Other austrian locations include vienna (130 employees),Steyr-Neuzeug,Linz,Graz,and Salzburg. BMD also has international branches in Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Hamburg, and Frauenfeld (Switzerland), all of which experienced sales growth in 2024/25.
Core Business Areas and Customer base
The software area constitutes the largest portion of BMD’s total sales, generating just under €43 million. New program sales contributed €20 million, followed by maintenance with €16 million. In 2024/25,BMD acquired 1,500 new customers, bringing its total customer base to over 30,000.
