While auroras are typically known for their green and red hues, this display was dominated by a vibrant blue, accompanied by a rare salmon-pink glow. According to Professor Shiokawa of Nagoya University, "Our findings suggest that nitrogen molecular ions may have accelerated upward by some mechanism and were responsible for the formation of the blue-dominant aurora." This theory proposes a novel atmospheric process at high altitudes, one that hasn’t been observed before. However, scientists still grapple with the mechanisms behind how these nitrogen ions, typically heavy and unstable at these heights, can persist in the upper atmosphere.

Re-examining Auroral Theories

Professor Shiokawa points out a significant inconsistency: "In this study, a structure of several hundred kilometers was found in the blue-dominant aurora in the longitudinal direction, which is difficult to interpret by ENA activity only. In addition, ENAs are unlikely to create auroral structures aligned with magnetic field lines, as observed in this study.”

These findings challenge conventional models of aurora formation, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of these enigmatic celestial displays.
