New screening techniques allow for shorter deferral periods.
Starting September 1, the French blood establishment (EFS) announced that individuals will be eligible to donate blood just two months after getting a tattoo or piercing. This is a reduction from the previous four-month waiting period, made possible by advancements in virus screening technologies, including those for hepatitis C.
The EFS stated that this change, detailed in a decree published in the Official Journal on April 10, halves the waiting time required after receiving a tattoo, piercing (including ear piercings), acupuncture, sclerosis treatment for varicose veins, or mesotherapy before donating blood, plasma, or platelets.
According to a press release from the EFS, “the evolution of the criteria for selecting donors is (…) The prospect for the EFS to recall that being tattooed does not prevent us from giving his blood permanently.”
The previous regulatory period was in place due to the potential risk of viral contamination, such as hepatitis C, associated with tattoos and piercings. However, the EFS notes that “improving hygiene conditions” in tattoo and piercing parlors also contribute to preventing contamination risks.
Donation Frequency
“We can do better,” said EFS president Frédéric Pacoud during a press conference before World Blood Donor Day on June 14.
The EFS reminds the public that blood donations can be made every eight weeks,up to four times annually for women and six times for men. Plasma donations are permitted every two weeks, up to 24 times per year, while platelet donations can be made every four weeks, with a maximum of twelve donations per year.
According to the EFS, less than 4% of French citizens between the ages of 18 and 70 donate blood at least once a year. “Each year, blood, plasma and platelet donations make it possible to treat a million patients with cancer, chronic diseases or even victims of hemorrhage,” recalls the EFS.
