The Importance of Voluntary Blood Donation: A Lifelong Commitment

One man’s story highlights the critical need for voluntary blood donors and the profound impact a single donation can have.

For Carlos Cavia, the commitment to donating blood began in his youth. Inspired to give back,he got a tattoo on his left arm that reads “don Blood give life”.
Now at 68 years old, Carlos Cavia is no longer eligible to donate due to age restrictions, which typically limit donors to those between 18 and 65.
He reflects on his years of service, emphasizing the importance of voluntary donations. “Carlos cavia” notes that there are two primary ways to donate: when a relative or friend is in need, or through voluntary donation.
For the last 20 years, carlos Cavia has been a voluntary donor. Initially, he donated blood in the conventional manner, but later transitioned to donating platelets via AFERESIS.
While blood can technically be donated every three months, platelets can be donated more frequently, about once a month.
Voluntary donations are crucial for maintaining blood bank reserves, especially for patients without family support, often those from rural areas. they are also vital in large cities were accidents occur frequently, and there is no time to solicit donors.
Carlos Cavia donated for many years at The Ricardo gutiérrez Children’s Hospital, believing that each donation could save multiple lives. “To think that my blood runs through the torrent of a child, now healthy and happy fills my soul,” he says.
He urges everyone to “Don Blood. Give it life.”
