French Parliament Approves bill Allowing Employees Paid Time Off for Blood Donation

The new law aims too address blood shortages by making it easier for employed individuals to donate during work hours.

The Assemblée Nationale in France has overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan bill that will allow employees to donate blood during their working hours without loss of pay. The measure has garnered widespread support from employees, employers, and the Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), the French national blood service.

The new law mandates a two-day advance notice for employees requesting to donate blood during work hours. This aims to facilitate the process and encourage more people to donate.

“C’est simplement une question d’organisation. Il faut que ça rentre dans les mœurs des français.”

Ahmed, a bus driver from Amiens, expressed his enthusiasm for the bill, stating, “Parfois, je travaille du lundi au dimanche, donc je n’ai pas vraiment pas le temps.” Aurélien, the owner of a cleaning company with 15 employees, also supports the initiative: “C’est simplement une question d’organisation. Il faut que ça rentre dans les mœurs des français.”

Addressing Blood Donation Challenges

The EFS welcomes this new legislation, as they have been facing difficulties in recruiting blood donors. Alexandre defrance, head of the Picardie collection area for the EFS, noted, “C’est aussi une opportunité pour créer du lien avec les entreprises.”

currently, the EFS requires 1200 bags of blood per week to meet the needs of patients across France. This new law is expected to significantly contribute to increasing blood donations and ensuring a stable supply.
