Heavy Metal Meets the Bard: A Unique Academic Exploration

The Neapolitan heavy metal band, Black Work, is set to bridge the gap between contemporary music and classical literature. On Monday, may 12th, at 1:30 PM, the band will present their musical interpretation of Shakespeare‘s “The Tempest” to ethnomusicology students at the Federico II University of Naples. The presentation will take place in classroom 2.3 of the via Marina dell’Adenta campus.

Black Work’s presentation will delve into the intricate process of transforming Shakespeare’s text into a sonic landscape. The band, comprised of Elisabetta Serio, Lino Vairetti, Pierpaolo Polcari, Giulio Martino, Ernesto nobili, and the group Bisca, will dissect their compositional choices, arrangement techniques, and the profound textual analysis that underpinned the creation of their album, “The Tempest,” released in January after eighteen months of dedicated work.

The lesson will illustrate to students the process of composition and translation of the text of the Bardo in sound scenarios, the choices of the arrangements, the in -depth reading to which the Neapolitan band has dedicated itself for the creation of the disc.
