He National Weather Service (SMN) issued a statement to the entire Mexican population and confirmed that as of Sunday December 28 will register a drop in temperatures and it could rain torrentially in different states of the country.

The government agency in charge of disseminating climate news detailed which federal entities of the country will be affected by thunderstorms and the cold to very cold environment.

In which states will temperatures drop from Sunday?

During the evening, a new cold front (no. 25) driven by an arctic air mass, will approach and enter the northern and northeastern border of the Mexican Republic.

In this context, it will combine with the polar and subtropical jet streams, as well as an atmospheric river, and will generate the conditions for a marked drop in temperatures.

At the same time, strong to very strong winds, rain and showers will occur in the aforementioned regions, as well as the possible fall of snow or sleet in the north of Chihuahua.

Where will subzero temperatures be recorded?

  • Minimum temperatures of -10 to -5 °C with frost: mountain areas of Baja California, Chihuahua and Durango.
  • Minimum temperatures of -5 to 0 °C with frost: mountain areas of Sonora, Nuevo León, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala and Puebla.
  • Minimum temperatures from 0 to 5 °C: mountain areas of Coahuila, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz and Oaxaca.

Based on the information disseminated by the SMN, a low pressure channel and a cyclonic circulation at medium and high levels of the atmosphere over the southeast of the country, will cause rains and showers in the east, south and southeast of Mexico, in addition to the Yucatán Peninsula, Chiapas (center and east) and Quintana Roo (center and south).

At the same time, another low pressure channel in the west and center of the country, added to the entry of humidity from the Pacific Ocean, will generate rains and showers with possible electric shocks in these regions during the course of the day.
