First Ballot Inconclusive: Black Smoke Emerges

St. Peter’s Square was filled with anticipation as tens of thousands of faithful gathered, their eyes fixed on the Sistine Chapel’s chimney. At approximately 9:00 PM, black smoke billowed forth, signaling that the first ballot of the 2025 papal conclave had failed to produce a pope. While not entirely unexpected, the outcome sets the stage for a potentially protracted process.
Conclave Dynamics: A More Diverse Electorate
This morning, the cardinals will reconvene for further deliberations, with four ballots scheduled – two in the morning and two in the afternoon – unless a successful election occurs sooner. One key factor influencing the conclave’s pace is the composition of the electorate.this year, the voters are 133 of 71 different countries. Not 115 as in the conclave of 2013. And this inevitably dilates the voting and ballot operations of the cards
.
The increased number of cardinal electors, representing a broader range of global perspectives, inevitably extends the voting and ballot counting procedures. The initial session, for instance, lasted over three hours. While the meditation by Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa contributed to the length of the session, each ballot is expected to consume a critically important amount of time.
While the specific preferences of individual cardinals remain closely guarded, the fact that the cardinals proceeded to vote on the first day suggests a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and begin the process of building consensus.
ritual and Symbolism: The Conclave’s Enduring Significance
Beyond the political machinations, the 2025 conclave is steeped in tradition and symbolism. The Sistine Chapel on Wednesday afternoon welcomed them as a great womb
. The solemn procession of 133 cardinals, representing 71 nations, into the sistine chapel was a powerful visual reminder of the gravity of their task. The pronouncement of extra omnes
at 5:42 PM marked the beginning of the cardinals’ seclusion,a period of intense prayer and discernment, shielded from external pressures.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, former Secretary of State under Pope Francis, is presiding over the conclave proceedings. He emphasized the importance of the cardinals’ mission, stating that The whole Church, united to us in prayer…invokes the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that a worthy shepherd of all the flock of christ is elected by us
.
looking Ahead: The Path to white Smoke
The world watches and waits, hoping for the emergence of white smoke, the signal that a new pope has been chosen. The conclave represents a pivotal moment for the catholic Church, as it seeks to navigate the challenges of the 21st century under new leadership. The coming days will be crucial in determining the future direction of the Church and its role in a rapidly changing world.

A Solemn Procession Begins
Amidst fervent prayers and under the watchful eyes of the world, the conclave to elect the next Pope has officially begun. The proceedings commenced with a solemn procession,a double file of purple-clad cardinals making their way from the paolina Chapel to the Sistine chapel at approximately 4:30 PM.This symbolic journey marks the start of a deeply spiritual and historically significant event.
entering the Sistine Chapel: Tradition and Oath
The procession included ceremonial elements such as the carrying of candlesticks, the presence of singers, and representatives from the Roman Rota and Apostolic Protonotaries. Key figures like Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, who delivered a meditation, Vice-Chamberlain Ilson de jesus montanari, and the secretary of the College of Cardinals, Fabio Fabene, also participated. the Cardinal Electors entered according to their order: deacons, presbyters, and bishops, with Cardinal Parolin being the last, accompanied by the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations, Diego Ravelli.
The Oath of Secrecy and Fidelity
Once inside the sistine Chapel, each cardinal took their assigned place, guided by a “knight” bearing their name. All eyes were fixed upon the Book of Gospels, placed beneath Michelangelo’s iconic fresco. The Veni Creator Spiritus
was intoned, followed by the swearing of an oath, adhering strictly to the regulations outlined in the Universi Dominici Gregis, the apostolic constitution governing papal conclaves.
Cardinal President Pietro Parolin, speaking on behalf of all present, recited the first part of the oath, promising faithful and scrupulous adherence to the rules of the conclave. The cardinals pledged to uphold the spiritual and temporal rights of the Holy See and to defend its freedom. The oath also included a commitment to maintain absolute secrecy and to resist any external interference in the election process.
We all and individual cardinal voters present in this election of the Supreme Pontiff promise, we oblige ourselves and I support to observe faithfully and scrupulously all the prescriptions contained in the aforementioned document. Likewise, we promise, we oblige ourselves and we swore that anyone of us, for divine disposition, is elected Roman Pontiff, will commit himself to faithfully carry out the Munus Petrinum of Pastore of the Worldwide Church and will not fail to affirm and defend the spiritual and temporal rights strenuously, as well as the freedom of the Holy See.
Universi Dominici gregis
Each cardinal then approached the Book of Gospels, placing their hand upon it and individually affirming their commitment to the oath. This individual oath was taken in reverse order of entry, beginning with the cardinal bishops, followed by the priests, and finaly the deacons.
And I promise, I obliged and swear. So God help me and these Evangeli saints who touch with my hand.
First Vote and Next Steps
following the extra omnes
– the command for all non-cardinals to leave the chapel – the cardinal electors, along with Monsignor Ravelli and Cardinal Cantalamessa (who delivered his meditation), remained in the Sistine Chapel. After their departure, the cardinals proceeded with the first vote. The results of this initial ballot remain confidential, as is customary. The conclave will continue until a new Pope is successfully elected.
