Black History Month: 100 Years of Celebration & Impact

The city of Cologne will continue to support the “Black History Month“. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary in February, the focus will be on black history, the present and the future. The “Black History Month” was written in 1926 by the African-American historian Carter G. Woodson established. To this day, the month of action pursues the goal of making the history of black people visible, promoting knowledge about their social, political and economic realities and deepening the examination of experiences of discrimination.

In the anniversary year, the city of Cologne, together with numerous civil society initiatives, is focusing on historical developments as well as current challenges and future perspectives. The program includes a range of cultural and educational formats, including readings, films, guided tours and Workshops.

The “Black History Month” is an integral part of the municipal process for coming to terms with the colonial legacy, which the city of Cologne has been pushing forward for several years. The month of action is aimed at all people and interested parties in the city of Cologne.
