In the heart of New York City, a unique initiative is harmonizing the lives of young musicians and senior citizens. The Happiness Factory, spearheaded by the Blachez family, is a testament to the power of music to connect generations and combat social isolation. The Blachez family consists of Pascale, the mother and pianist, alongside her children marcel (trumpet), Ivanhoé (saxophone), Horace (guitar and percussion), and Isis (violin and microphone), with father Ludovic joining in on bass.

From Personal Frustration to Communal Harmony
Pascale’s journey to founding the Happiness Factory began with a childhood yearning to play the piano, a desire initially unmet. While she initially pursued a career in chemistry, her passion for music never faded. After her third child was born,she decided to reconnect with her musical aspirations,immersing herself in the world of jazz and improvisation.
Her experiences in a parisian jazz school,arpej,opened her eyes to a world of musical freedom and expression. this newfound passion, combined with a desire to honor her grandfather, inspired her to bring music to retirement homes.
Expanding the Circle of Joy
The Blachez family’s initial performances in a Parisian retirement home in 2016 sparked a wave of enthusiasm. The residents were deeply moved by the intergenerational connection, and the initiative quickly grew. The family was joined by other young musicians, forming a collective that performed in numerous locations across Paris.

The Happiness Factory in New York: A Growing impact
Upon returning to New York in 2022, Pascale Blachez established the Happiness Factory, building upon the success of her previous endeavors. The project gained momentum, with a significant increase in concerts performed in senior centers and other facilities for the elderly. By March 2024, the organization was officially registered as a non-profit, enabling it to expand its reach and secure funding.
The need for such initiatives is evident,as social isolation among the elderly remains a significant concern in both France and the United States. According to a 2023 report by the AARP Foundation, millions of older adults in the U.S. experience social isolation, which can have detrimental effects on their physical and mental health.
Pascale envisions a future where Happiness factories exist in every city,connecting local schools,families,and retirement homes. She believes that It is quite possible because ther are children who make music everywhere, and structures for seniors too.
The Happiness Factory’s concerts provide a vital chance for seniors to engage with their community and experience moments of joy. Pascale recounts how residents often dance, sing, and express their gratitude, highlighting the profound impact of these performances.
Whatever their physical skills, they start dancing, moving, applauding …Sometimes they go to the microphone to sing! Some start to cry. They tell children: ‘It was so beautiful, you can’t know the good that it did to me’
