Mendixka Plant Shifts Focus to 100% Bio-Waste Processing
Table of Contents
A decade after its launch, the Mendixka facility is pivoting to specialize in bio-waste treatment, enhancing local environmental efforts.
The Mendixka site is undergoing a significant transformation to become a dedicated bio-waste processing center. Officially unveiled on June 6 by Daniel Arribère, vice-president of the Bil Ta Garbi union, the move underscores a commitment to local resource management and ecological efficiency. The upgraded facility will handle food waste from households, communities, and businesses across a large area, reducing the need for long-distance transportation and promoting a circular economy.
Key to the modernization is the installation of a biodecondner, designed to separate packaging from food waste. Another crucial upgrade is the SPAN C3 health approval, which allows the plant to process category 3 animal by-products, particularly from restaurants and the food industry. This enhancement ensures the site meets the requirements of the Sorting sorting Act, which mandates extensive waste management practices.
Strategic Shift Enhances Regional Waste Network
By becoming a 100 % bio -waste center, the equipment affirms its place in the heart of the ecological transition of the territory.
While residual household waste will still be received at Mendixka, a new transfer platform will facilitate its delivery to the Canopia site in Bayonne, where it will be processed into compost and energy. This coordinated approach strengthens the regional network established by Bil ta Garbi, optimizing resource recovery across multiple locations.
Ten years after its initial launch,Mendixka’s strategic shift positions it as a central component of the region’s ecological transition, working in tandem with the community of communes of Béarn des Gaves and the Basque Country Agglomeration Community. This evolution represents a commitment to sustainable practices, prioritizing the use of organic resources for agricultural land and bolstering local environmental sustainability.
