Following the success of their list of Hottest Female Rappers in 2024, Billboard’s editorial team has expanded its focus to the vibrant world of R&B. Last year, the genre thrived with numerous artists contributing groundbreaking music.
Usher and Chris Brown established themselves as enduring icons in R&B. Both artists displayed impressive stage presence and festival prowess, cementing their legends in the R&B community.
R&B Revivals: Return of Classic Artists
Fan interest surged with the return of PartyNextDoor and Bryson Tiller. PartyNextDoor achieved his first top 10 on the Billboard 200, while Bryson Tiller topped the Billboard Hot 100.
Jhene Aiko and Kehlani continued to thrive, drawing large crowds at their arena tours. SZA maintained her dominance as a needle-mover, following the success of her album SOS, and added a Grammy-nominated collaboration with Kendrick Lamar.
Emerging Stars to Watch
Victoria Monét emerged victorious at the 2024 Grammys and continued to tour internationally following the release of her deluxe album, “Jaguar II.”
Summer Walker’s continued musical output, despite a less active year, kept her firmly in the hearts of R&B fans. Her single “Heart of a Woman” even made it onto the Billboard Hot 100.
Coco Jones dodged the sophomore slump, scoring a numerous successes including her hit song “ICU” and continued success on both airplay charts and with multiple guest features.
Kehlani made a bold return with her club anthem “After Hours,” which topped charts and continued her success with numerous collaborations.
Leon Thomas rocketed to prominence with his debut R&B album “Mutt,” featuring hit singles like “Answer Your Phone” and “Yes It Is.”
PartyNextDoor’s return wasn’t the only comeback album making waves. His “PARTYNEXTDOOR 4” reached Billboard 200’s top 10, cementing his place in the R&B conversation.
Muni Long’s breakthrough hit “Hrs and Hrs” rocketed her to mainstream success, receiving a Grammy for Best R&B Performance.
Usher’s “Coming Home” marked another top 10 debut on the Billboard 200, and his Super Bowl performance solidified his legendary status.
Chris Brown’s “11:1” and its deluxe version continued to produce hit singles like “Residuals” and “Sensational,” cementing his place as a chart-topping artist.
SZA maintained her dominant presence with hit singles like “Saturn” and collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, securing multiple Grammy nominations and a Tour supporting his album “GNX.”
