The auction featuring the personal memorabilia of Bill Walton is drawing to a close. As the basketball icon himself might have said,now is the time to “throw it down” if you intend to bid.

Up for grabs are artifacts from Walton’s illustrious career, keepsakes from his journey to basketball stardom, and unique items reflecting his deep connection to the Grateful Dead. Hunt Auctions is presenting nearly 300 items in total.

Bill Walton,who secured championships in both the NBA and at UCLA,passed away last year following a battle with cancer.

“On behalf of the entire Walton family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Hunt Auctions for its meticulous care in organizing Bill’s possessions,” said lori Walton, his widow.

The collection includes a wide array of items, from the first basketball hoop he used at his home in La Mesa, Calif., to his letterman’s jacket from Helix High School.

Representing his time at UCLA, where he led the “Walton Gang,” are his NCAA championship rings, watches, awards, game-worn jerseys, and shoes.

Walton also claimed NBA championships with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Boston Celtics, and memorabilia from both of thes title-winning seasons are prominently featured.

Among the items are his uniforms, signed basketballs, and the Wallace Park shirt he famously wore during the Trail Blazers’ 1977 championship parade.

A known enthusiast of reading and writing, the auction includes signed replies and notes from figures like John Wooden, kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob cousy, and Rick Barry.

Walton embraced music with the same passion he had for sports and literature. As the son of a trumpet player, his affinity for the grateful Dead is reflected in various souvenirs.

On offer are the iconic Father Time costumes he donned at the Grateful Dead’s new Year’s Eve shows, his collection of tie-dyed T-shirts, a framed collage of backstage passes, jackets, signed photos, posters, and two custom-made, Grateful Dead-themed bicycles.

Other artists from whom Walton acquired signed memorabilia include Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, and Pearl Jam.

The University of California San Diego Health Center is among the beneficiaries of the auction. Walton underwent a surgery there that restored his mobility.

“In 2008, Bill underwent life-saving back surgery at UC San Diego Health, and he credits his surgeon, dr. Steven Garfin, for his remarkable recovery,” Lori Walton said. “In honor of Dr. Garfin, we are donating a portion of the auction proceeds to UC San diego Health.”
