Bewdley will host its first ever dementia day in August

The town of Bewdley, nestled in Worcestershire, marks a significant milestone as it prepares to host its inaugural dementia day. This community event aims to raise awareness about dementia and foster a supportive network for those affected by the condition.

A Community Effort

Scheduled for August 10, the dementia day will feature a multi-faceted approach to raising awareness. The event will kick off with a special service at St Anne’s Church, providing spiritual support to participants. Following the ceremony, the afternoon will be filled with a variety of competitions, games, and engaging activities organized at Jubilee Gardens.

Organiser Sharon Harvey anticipates a substantial turnout, hoping the event will attract over 200 attendees. “We’re thrilled to be the first in Bewdley to host such an event, and we hope the entire town will come together to support it,” she stated.

The impetus behind this initiative lies in Bewdley’s demographics. With a growing elderly population, the likelihood of increasing cases of dementia is a pressing concern. Organizers believe fostering a dementia-friendly community is crucial for the well-being of all residents.

The Urgency of Dementia Awareness

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, an estimated 928,000 individuals in the UK currently live with dementia. Shockingly, one-third of these individuals have not yet been diagnosed. The number is expected to soar to 1.4 million by 2040, underscoring the importance of early awareness and support.

Supporting Sufferers and Carers

While raising awareness is vital, creating a supportive environment is equally important. “We aim to support carers and sufferers, but also engage those who have an interest in understanding the condition,” said Sharon Harvey. Recognizing dementia as “a horrible disease,” she emphasized the importance of friendship and social interaction for those affected by it.

Harvey clarified, “Our goal is to provide a safe, fun, and relaxing environment where people with dementia can participate in activities they enjoy. This event is about more than awareness; it’s about community and support.”

Building a Dementia-Friendly Community

The Bewdley Dementia Day is just one aspect of an ongoing campaign aimed at making Bewdley a dementia-friendly community. This initiative seeks to create an environment where individuals living with the condition are understood, respected, and supported.

By offering a wide range of activities, this event goes beyond mere awareness, providing a fun and engaging space for all participants. “We want to do anything we can to make lives better for carers and sufferers. This dementia day is a small step towards that,” Harvey added.

The organizers are hopeful this event will inspire further initiatives and conversations about dementia in Bewdley and beyond. By fostering an informed and supportive community, they aim to create a stronger, more empathetic environment for all residents.

If you are planning to attend, please mark your calendars for August 10 and join Bewdley in its commendable effort to raise awareness and support those affected by dementia.
