Belgium Cinema: A Real Cinema Powerhouse

If Belgian cinema hits the mark when it comes to news items, the more banal reality is not left out. And this, in the tradition of the Dardenne brothers with films like Tori and Loki (2022) on the reality of life as a refugee in Belgium or even Young Mothers (2025) which delves into the heart of a maternal home for adolescent girls. “They were a bit of pioneers, explorers who allowed a whole wave of new filmmakers to exist“, explains director Valéry Carnoy.

Among these new filmmakers: Namuroise Paloma Sermon-Daï who signed It’s raining in the house. Released in 2023, the film focuses on precarious youth who, between households and tourist flights, try to get their heads above water.

In A World (2021), Laura Wandel deals with harassment, the feeling of helplessness and the dilemmas that arise for the victims’ loved ones. “It’s important to show the reality of our world from different aspects, angles and sometimes with offbeat points of view.“, judges the director. All in the hope of getting as close as possible to the truth and the experiences of everyone.
