Baykar Strikes a Deal with Indonesia for Advanced Drones and Joint Venture
Turkish manufacturer Baykar has entered into a comprehensive agreement with Indonesia to supply advanced drones and establish a local production facility. This announcement follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to several Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan, with a delegation of ministers and industry experts.
The deal involves the procurement of 60 Bayraktar TB3 and nine Bayraktar Akinci UCAVs. A joint venture will be formed with the Indonesian company Republikorp, aimed at building a drone manufacturing facility in Indonesia. Baykar will provide its manufacturing expertise, technology transfer, and training, while Republikorp will ensure regulatory compliance, infrastructure development, local certification, and integration into Indonesia’s defense ecosystem.
Bayraktar TB3: The Advanced Drone for Naval Operations
The Bayraktar TB3 is a cutting-edge version of the renowned TB2, designed specifically for naval use. This Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drone has been engineered to operate from ships, particularly with its short runway capability, allowing it to launch from amphibious assault vessels like the TCG Anadolu.
The TB3 made its maiden flight on October 27, 2023, and its recent tests have demonstrated its prowess. It completed its first live fire test in January 2025, successfully deploying MAM-T munitions. The drone is equipped with the multimode ASELFLIR-500 system for ISR missions and can carry up to 280 kilograms of payload on its six hardpoints.

The Bayraktar Akinci is a High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) drone, categorized as a strategic-class platform by Baykar. It is powered by two turboprop engines, possesses a wingspan of 20 meters, and has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 6 tons with a 1,500 kg payload capacity.
This drone is designed not only for high-altitude ISR missions but also for combat operations, with the potential for air-to-air combat missions using air-to-air missiles. Equipped with advanced electronic systems and dual satellite communication, the Akinci can perform a wide range of operations from air superiority to humanitarian relief.

TB3 Naval Operations: Autonomous Landings and Takeoffs
The TB3 has demonstrated its capability for naval operation by autonomously taking off from and landing on the TCG Anadolu amphibious assault ship. This test symbolizes a significant technological leap, showcasing the drone’s STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) characteristics and its use of a ski jump launches.
Preceding this sea-based test, the TB3 conducted months of trials on a land-based ski-jump in May 2024, fine-tuning its launch procedures. When landing, the TB3 uses its onboard braking system, eliminating the need for an arrestor hook.
