Turbulent days in Bavaria: DWD with winter forecast for the Free State
First report from January 8th, 8:15 p.m: Munich – Bavaria are facing turbulent winter days. The German Weather Service (DWD) writes on Thursday, January 8th: “Over the course of Thursday, the warm front of a rapidly intensifying storm low will approach from the west.” This sometimes brings severe frost. There is also snow, slippery conditions and dangers.
Danger from “freezing rain”: New snowfall is also causing slippery conditions in Bavaria
Already during the night and into Thursday morning there is “widespread slippery snow” in Bavaria. According to the meteorologists, in some areas there is “up to 3 cm of fresh snow, in Oberallgäu around 5 cm”. There could also be slippery conditions due to snowfall later on Thursday. That’s why the DWD also warns of slippery conditions and frost in its warning map for the whole of Bavaria with levels one to two – an overview of all warnings can be found here:
It will also be dangerous on the night of Friday, January 9th. First of all, there is precipitation spreading from the southwest, write the meteorologists. “In the north and east of Bavaria there was snowfall for a long time with slippery conditions, otherwise there was an increasing transition to rain,” it continues. The danger: “In isolated cases, from the Alps across the foothills to Lower Bavaria, there is often black ice due to freezing rain!”
Winter blast in Bavaria: snow over the weekend – and extremely sub-zero temperatures
On Friday, January 9th, it will initially be a little milder during the day, with more precipitation coming down as rain. The maximum temperatures are between one and eight degrees. From the evening onwards there will be snow again due to the simultaneously falling temperatures. “On Saturday night there will be an increasing transition to snow or sleet with slippery conditions down to lower altitudes,” warn the meteorologists from the German Weather Service.

Between Saturday, January 10th and Sunday, January 11th, there will be snowfall throughout Bavaria, even at low altitudes. According to the DWD, this can be more severe at higher altitudes, and in the higher Alpine foothills, “snow drifts are likely,” warn the experts. The ten-day graphic from the German Weather Service also shows that meteorologists are expecting precipitation and snow throughout the coming week. The temperatures sometimes fluctuate around minus ten degrees. (Source: DWD)(fhz)
