The global car supplier ZF is fighting for survival. With over ten billion euros in debt, the company, which employs 160,000 people worldwide, is difficult to strike. The difficult market situation in the automotive industry is also difficult for the group.
In Schweinfurt, 8,600 people currently work for ZF. But their jobs are at stake. According to information from the Bavarian Radio, the company is already negotiating with the IG Metall and the works council about the planned personnel loss. The union fears the worst.
The overall works council assumes a drastic job cuts. Between 3,000 and 4,000 jobs could be painted in Schweinfurt – that would be almost half of the workforce. A bad news for those affected and their families.

Holger Klein, the CEO of ZF, speaks plain text. When submitting the financial figures for the first half of 2025, he said in a press release: “We are aware that we demand a lot of people at ZF. We act with great responsibility and as socially acceptable as possible.” Klein referred to the dramatic situation of the entire industry: “But it is also clear that our industry is in a historically difficult location that makes our turnaround difficult.”
Schweinfurt is not the only Bavarian location that faces a staff loss. Other works by the car supplier are also affected. In Nuremberg, the jobs are to be reduced from 1,000 to only 300. There is also a massive clear cut in Auerbach: around 1,500 jobs could be dropped there. Around 650 jobs are threatened in Thyrnau, and 250 jobs are on the brink in Bayreuth.
Desperate protests by the workforce
The fear of loss of job is tangible. At several locations, the employees are already on the streets. The protests reflect the despair of people who fear for their professional existence.
At the end of July, Oliver Moll, the Chairman of the Works Council of ZF in Schweinfurt, made it clear to the Bavarian Radio of which numbers one calculated: by 2030, the dismantling could be between 800 and 4,000 jobs.

The fate of the ZF employees will choose in the coming months. Negotiations between the management, union and the works council are ongoing. For CEO Klein, the path taken is without alternative.
