The European battery initiative ACC is scrapping plans for two large battery factories in Italy and Germany, according to the Italian metals union UILM.

“ACC’s management confirmed to us this morning what we have long feared: ACC’s plans to build a gigafactory in Termoli have definitely been scrapped, which is also the case in Germany,” the union writes in a statement.

ACC, which is backed by Stellantis, French energy giant Total Energies and Mercedes-Benz, was a competitor to Northvolt and has been singled out as important by the EU to reduce dependence on China.

The factories would be located in Kaiserslautern and Termoli respectively.
