Breast cancer screening reaches a new milestone in Barbezieux. Thanks to a donation of 23,000 euros from the Charentais committee of the League against Cancer, hospitals in South Charente will acquire a second latest generation ultrasound machine, expected in December. “This device will be exclusively dedicated to screening, unlike the first, shared with the perinatal center. This will streamline the organization and prevent patients from having to return for check-up examinations,” says Romain Labrouquaire, director of the South Charente hospitals.
The president of the Charente committee of the League against Cancer, Doctor Jean-Pierre Dupuychaffray, insists: “This is the first time that the League has supported a local hospital for equipment. This grant is part of our mission to improve access to screening, while delays are very long in Angoulême and Soyaux. » In Barbezieux, deadlines remain reasonable, around five months, with emergency windows. In 2024, 2,550 mammograms were performed there by doctors Hanitra Razafindrahaingo and Rosette Randriamahazaka.
“This new ultrasound machine, equipped with a blood flow analysis module, will help us better interpret images, an essential issue as cases of cancer increase, particularly among younger women,” they emphasize. The total cost of the equipment amounts to 53,000 euros. “The League’s participation is at its maximum, between 40 and 60% of the amount. It is a strong commitment that we wish to reproduce with other establishments in Charente,” concludes Jean-Pierre Dupuychaffray.
Complete Pink October program
Workshops, participatory frescoes, film discussion evenings and additional mammography slots: throughout Pink October, hospitals in South Charente are mobilizing to promote breast cancer screening. During the 5th edition of Rues Bancs Roses organized by the City of Barbezieux, nearly 700 participants ran or walked in support, while the hospital hosted a stand dedicated to prevention and information.
