The Indonesian island of Bali, often called the “Island of the Gods,” is facing a devastating crisis as severe flooding impacts communities across the region.

Heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday caused widespread flooding in major population centers, resulting in at least a dozen fatalities, with the number expected to rise. Many people remain missing, and numerous buildings have collapsed due to the extreme flooding.

A glimpse of the devastation can be seen in this video showing a structure collapsing amidst the floodwaters.

In Denpasar, Bali’s capital, authorities have reported five deaths. Four additional deaths occurred in the Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung regions. Furthermore, eight bodies were recovered from the wreckage of a building that collapsed in the Kumbasari market in Denpasar.

These figures are preliminary, and officials anticipate further casualties. The number of missing individuals remains unknown.

“I’m worried, I hope there would no longer be such a heavy rain like the one last night. I hope the Denpasar government will handle it soon … it’s never happened like this before.”

“My house was flooded and we couldn’t go anywhere, we were completely isolated until 3pm,” Denpasar resident Ni Made Anggraeni told ABC. “From yesterday morning to the morning of today, the rain never stopped. All my life living in Bali, this is the first time this happened. I am scared without a doubt, but we were lucky this morning, we were all awake … if we had been asleep, we had no idea there would be a flood and we would have been carried away.”

Rescue teams are navigating flooded areas on foot and by boat to reach stranded residents.

Roads that are not flooded are experiencing significant traffic congestion as people attempt to evacuate. Access to Denpasar’s international airport is limited due to the traffic.

Denpasar Local Ardiansyah Told The ABC: “I’m worried, I hope there would no longer be such a heavy rain like the one last night. I hope the Denpasar government will handle it soon … it’s never happened like this before.”

The situation remains critical, and prayers are with the people of bali.
