Baldur’s Gate 3 successor won’t use Vulkan

Larian’s Next RPG: Ditching Vulkan, Embracing New Visuals

Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, are already looking towards their next project, a new RPG slated for release sometime after 2028. While the full details are still under wraps, we’ve gotten some fascinating insights into what Larian has in store.

Moving On From Vulkan

In a recent talk at the Breda University of Applied Sciences, senior graphics programmer Wannes Vanderstappen revealed that Larian’s next RPG will not utilize either Vulkan or DirectX 11. This comes as a surprise considering BG3 offers both APIs for players to choose from.

Vanderstappen explained that both Vulkan and DirectX 11 presented more challenges than benefits for the development team, causing issues that outweighing their advantages. Adding DirectX 12 support on top of the existing APIs would have been a massive undertaking for the studio.

"It’s already done. We’re finally rid of DirectX 11 and Vulkan – we don’t use anymore," Vanderstappen stated.

A Brand New Engine, Brand New Visuals

Larian is utilizing this opportunity to overhaul their proprietary engine, granting the engine team "pre-production time" for the first time in the company’s history. This investment allows for significant advancements in graphical fidelity.

The new engine is targeting a full global illumination lighting system for more dynamic and realistic lighting, as well as the implementation of mesh shaders. While the full extent of the graphical enhancements remains unknown, these additions promise a visual leap from Baldur’s Gate 3.

Building Anticipation

The news about Larian’s next venture has already built immense hype among fans. The studio has proven its ability to craft immersive and engaging RPG experiences, and the promise of an even more powerful engine and advanced visuals sets the stage for something truly spectacular.
