Michael Hsu Office of Architecture has unveiled Balboa Surf Club, a new seafood restaurant in Houston’s Uptown district, where mid-century modern design meets a touch of brutalism for a unique dining experience.
The restaurant’s striking presence on Post Oak Boulevard is immediately evident in its tall volume clad in vanilla stucco and wooden slats. This warm facade glows beautifully in the evenings, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience.
A Warm Welcome in a Lush Courtyard
Stepping inside, diners are greeted by a courtyard filled with lush landscaping and custom-made, green glazed tiles. This serene space, accented by organic materials like wood and stone, creates a welcoming atmosphere before guests enter the main dining area.
Conversation-Starting Design Details
Inside, the restaurant’s split-level layout features a central bar surrounded by several different dining zones, each offering its own unique atmosphere. Large windows flood the lower area with natural light, while the upper level boasts a moodier ambiance.
Richly toned wood permeates the space, used on everything from the bar and walls to the flooring and furnishings. Custom green leather upholstery adds a pop of color, while brass lighting fixtures add a touch of elegance. An undulating concrete installation suspended above the sushi bar adds a sculptural element, transforming the bar into a dynamic performance space.
Outdoor Oasis
The enclosed patio offers additional seating options, complete with concrete planters overflowing with greenery, a fire pit with Adirondack-style chairs, and a cozy patio area perfect for intimate conversations.
