Backyard Baseball ’01 – Steam & Mobile Release Date

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Backyard Baseball ’01 will be completely reissued and will be released on Steam and mobile devices on July 8th. The remake comes from Mega Cat Studios in cooperation with Playground Productions, which now have the rights to the classic Backyard Sports series. The game brings 28 of the originally 31 MLB professionals from the 2001 version, including fan favorites such as Derek Jeter, Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mark McGwire.

This is not just a quick port. According to Playground Productions, the game was adapted with modern PC control and touch support, which means that the original game feeling is preserved and at the same time the fun on modern devices is improved. It will also contain official MLB licenses, including team logos, names and players.

The new publication is followed by a number of retro releases by Mega Cat Studios and Playground Productions, which have already brought Backyard Soccer ’98 and Backyard Baseball ’97 back into circulation. These games were a great success on both Steam and mobile devices, and Backyard Baseball ’97 even appeared for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 this summer.

Next follows “Backyard Baseball ’01” – with the most comprehensive package so far. Lindsay Barnett, CEO of Playground Productions, reported on the work associated with the return of the game. The studio had to recover all individual game rights from the 2001 version-a total of 31 professional MLB stars. She also emphasized MLB’s support during the process.

“It is really exciting because we had to get back all the original rights to the game,” said Barnett. “There was the MLB, and then there were 31 professional players, all-stars from this baseball era. The MLB was incredibly supported by this game and this partnership, which was really exciting for us.”

Barnett also spoke about her personal connection to the game and remembered how she became a life-long Cubs fan as a child through the 2001 version. This is one of the goals of this new edition: it would like to have a similar effect on a new generation and at the same time give long -term fans the opportunity to experience one of the most memorable sports games in the early 2000.

The new edition appears at a time when more and more studios recognize the lasting value of retro sports games. While modern titles rely on realism and simulation, games like Backyard baseball were bursting with personality. The mix of real MLB stars and animated children from the neighborhood created something unique and charming. The 2001 edition is often the highlight of the series thanks to the complete MLB support and the playable professional athletes who were reinterpreted as children.

This mix of childhood nostalgia and real fan base is an important reason that the game has been in the minds of people for so long. Jamie Leece, Senior Vice President for Gaming and Virtual Reality of the MLB, spoke about the legacy of the game and his new chapter.

“Thanks to its lovable properties and features, which were particularly rare for a video game of his time, Backyard Baseball has a special place in the memory of many fans,” said Leec. “We are very happy to make a small contribution to the authentication of this revival with MLB brands and look forward to the moment when the circle closes and those who played this popular game as children can bring it closer to a new generation in their families and friends.”

And that’s not the end of the flagpole. Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios are already working on a Backyard Sports game of the next generation. Barnett has not yet confirmed whether this project will concentrate on baseball or encompass several sports, but the team clearly sees it a greater return of the brand and not just a unique revival.

“Well, we have not yet announced anything about which sport is our new title or whether there are several sports or something in this kind, so you just have to wait,” said Barnett.

Fans don’t have to wait long to play Backyard Baseball ’01 again. The game will be released on July 8, just in time for the summer break and the MLB All-Star season. Regardless of whether you played it back then or have never played before-the return of this popular arcade baseball game promises to become one of the well-being new editions of the year.
