Back Up Photos to Google Photos – Easy Guide

Google Photos works on Android, iPhone, PC and Mac. The service gives you 15 GB of free cloud storage (shared between Google Photos, Gmail and Disk), and you can buy more space from NOK 20 a month. When backup is activated, your photos are saved automatically, so you won’t lose them if your phone is lost or broken.

This is how you do it on your mobile

Download the Google Photos app from the App Store or Google Play. Sign in with your Google account and tap your profile picture in the top right. Select Backup and turn on the switch. The app then starts uploading photos and videos automatically.

Under Settings (gear icon) you can choose quality:

  • Original for full resolution.
  • Storage friendly for more easily compressed images that use less space.

You can also decide whether photos should be uploaded via mobile data or Wi-Fi only. On Android, you can choose which folders to back up — such as screenshots or WhatsApp photos — while iPhone automatically uploads everything in your camera roll.

Here’s how to do it on your computer

On PC and Mac, you can use the web version of Google Photos. Go to photos.google.com, sign in and click on + at the top right to upload images or entire folders. You can also install Google Drive for the desktop, which automatically uploads new files from selected folders in the background.

Choose whether you want to send the files to Google Drive, Google Photos or both. Note that deleting in Google Photos does not delete the local files on your computer – uploading is only one way.

Access from all devices

Once everything is set up, you’ll have access to your entire photo library from any device where you’re logged in. You can search for people, places and subjects, and easily share albums with family and friends.
