Photos of the famous actress who went for a walk with her daughter in a baby carrier went around the world. But according to the expert, she did not choose the right method. How to carry a baby in winter?
Klokanky radšej nie
Známa herečka si vyšla na prechádzku so svojou najmladšou dcérkou.
Do ulíc chladného New Yorku vyrazila s bábätkom v nosiči. Ako si však mohli pozorné oči všimnúť, spôsob, akým nosí svoje bábätko, nie je s kostolným poriadkom.

The actress, wrapped in a coat and a large scarf, carried her little girl in an obviously non-ergonomic carrier and facing away from her. And although the baby, wrapped in a light overall, was content and looking at the world, such wearing can have a really bad effect on his health. And not only that, improper wearing can also have an impact on his mother’s spine.
According to children’s physiotherapist František Takáč from the rehabilitation clinic FYZIO KLINIK, this way of wearing is not suitable at all. And he immediately listed several reasons.
“The first thing I would mention is that a child’s spine does not yet work like an adult’s spine and therefore it is not correct to load it vertically before the child starts to do it on its own,” he said. He explained it by the fact that the child is excessively overloading the back group of muscles.
“Also, this method of carrying has a non-physiological effect on the hip joints. Last but not least, the person carrying the child is also overloaded in this way. It can cause problems of the axial apparatus in the near or distant time,” he explained.
According to the expert, such long-term wearing can result in the baby switching. “That’s exactly what parents often complain to us about in therapy and they don’t know that inappropriate handling is one of the triggering factors,” he says.
However, as he added in one breath, a lot also depends on the child’s age: “A newborn reacts differently to passive uprighting, a three-month-old infant differently, and a 10-month-old child who is already standing up on his own.”
Wrong turn
Another thing that should be mentioned is the fact that in such a “kangaroo” the baby’s face is very wrongly turned away from the mother’s body. Apart from the fact that he lacks an important sense of security in such a position, there is another risk.
“It is also about the safety of the child and the parent. Especially now in the winter months, when the risk of falling is increased, the loss of stability of the carrying parent can mean a literal disaster in such a position,” warns Takač.
However, many mothers do not realize that improper wearing can have a direct impact on the overall movement of the child. The physiotherapist emphasizes that it is true that the development of movement as such is genetically determined.
“Each healthy individual moves on his own, faster with stimuli, slower without stimuli, but external factors also influence movement, which is definitely what wearing is,” he says.
According to him, long-term improper wearing can later cause a weaker body posture, wide-legged walking, bowing of the legs, tiptoeing, distended belly, etc. “These are all problems that we regularly encounter, and in many cases they could be avoided,” warns parents František Takáč.
However, it is also worth mentioning carrying babies in the winter. Here, too, one must take into account not only the right way, but also the right clothes. The physiotherapist admits that in the cold season and under layers of clothing, it is much worse to control the posture.
Be careful in winter
“The child’s clothing is important in winter, as well as thermoregulation, so it is necessary to procure a quality overall. However, beware of unnecessary dressing of the child, which we often see in parents’ fear that the child will not catch a cold,” he points out.
According to the expert, in winter, it is necessary to monitor much more intensively whether the child has a bow, slouch, or an unnatural position in the hip joints when being carried.
“Newborns and children up to 3 months old are recommended to be carried outside the home in an ergonomic egg, or in the so-called bassinet of a stroller. Children older than 3 months can be carried in the arms, in the right positions, but not for a very long time, we recommend alternating positions with natural positions of development on the ground, on the stomach and back, where muscle interplay is best activated,” advises the physiotherapist.
According to him, parents often forget that long-term carrying on the hands, long and regular car journeys and generally inactive positions lead to psychomotor retardation, or strong attachment to the wearer.
“This can later pose a problem during socialization and independent development. Older, healthy children can already face gravity on their own, there is no need to take significant measures, in the period of 6 months and more, in the case of normal muscle tension and symmetry of the child, we tolerate ergonomic carriers and scarves, but not inappropriate aids,” concludes the physiotherapist.
In order not to harm the baby or ourselves, we have to wear it ergonomically correctly. Physiotherapist Mgr. Radoslava Šefferová. She also admitted in our video that there are many experts in her field who are outright against wearing it and there are also those who actually recommend wearing it, see more in the video:
