Avoid Contagion: Understanding Disease Spread & Immunity

by Archynetys Health Desk

The influenza in Colombia is once again at the center of healthcare after the official confirmation of the active circulation of different subtypes of the virus in the national territory. The National Institute of Health and the Ministry of Health indicated that this behavior responds to a seasonal pattern associated with climate changes and to increased internal and external mobility.

The current scenario has led to reinforcing calls for influenza vaccinationespecially in risk groups, and to maintain self-care measures. The authorities warn that, although it is not an extraordinary situationthe context requires vigilance to reduce infections and respiratory complications.

Simultaneous circulation of subtypes in the country

Epidemiological surveillance systems have identified the parallel presence of influenza A(H1N1) y A(H3N2)in addition to some records of influenza B, in different areas of Colombia. These findings come from sentinel laboratories distributed in several regions, confirming an active and sustained circulation.

The INS explained that this pattern is common in seasons of high climate variability, when social gatherings and travel increase. However, The impact is usually greater in vulnerable populationswhich is why early prevention is insisted upon.

International alert and reinforced surveillance

The health sector maintains permanent monitoring of what is happening outside the country. In December, a case associated with a variant of the subtype was reported in Mexico H3N2in a context of increasing infections in the northern hemisphere. In Europe, early detection of variants has coincided with an increase in hospitalizations.

The epidemiologist Leonardo José León warned City TV that some mutations can facilitate the transmission and reduce prior protection, although he stressed that it is not a time for alarm but for responsible care. He insisted on consulting health professionals regarding symptoms and avoiding self-medication.

Symptoms and measures to prevent contagion

Health authorities remember that Influenza usually begins with a high fever and coughaccompanied by general malaise, nasal congestion and fatigue. In severe cases, respiratory complications may occur that require timely medical attention.
