The initiatives to promote vaccinations envisaged by the national and regional vaccination plans continue. In particular, in recent days the Romagna Local Health Authority has sent messages via electronic health record or text message to those born in 1961 who were not vaccinated against Pneumococcus and Herpes Zoster (St. Anthony’s Fire) with the invitation to get vaccinated against these dangerous diseases. Messages were also sent to those born in 1960 who did not get vaccinated during 2025.
From 2017, an active and free vaccination offer will be provided to people who turn 65 during the year (those born in 1961 in 2026). The planned vaccinations are those against Pneumococcus and Herpes Zoster and represent an important opportunity for protection against the complications of these diseases.
Pneumococcal diseases are caused by a bacterium, called Streptococcus pneumoniae, of which there are numerous variants (serotypes). Pneumococcal infections are widespread in the population even in the absence of symptoms. In some cases this bacterium can cause ear infections and pneumonia, spread into the blood (septicaemia-sepsis) or into the central nervous system (meningitis), with very serious and even fatal consequences, especially in people with chronic diseases or of older age.
Herpes Zoster, commonly called Shingles, is a common pathology due to the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. It can cause complications at the nerve fiber level that cause intense and chronic pain that can last for a long time (even years). To have these vaccinations you can contact your general practitioner or book via Cup, Cuptel and Cupweb (Fse) to access the Public Hygiene clinics. A medical prescription is not required for booking.
