Assassin’s Creed Shadows: A Generational Leap on PS5 Pro?

Ubisoft touts important enhancements, leveraging the console’s advanced capabilities for a definitive gaming experience.

Ubisoft Optimistic About Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro

Despite initial criticisms, Ubisoft appears confident in the trajectory of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, emphasizing ongoing updates and improvements. A recent considerable update, reportedly around 20 GB, introduces enhancements across gameplay, performance, and visual fidelity. The spotlight is notably on the PlayStation 5 Pro version, which Ubisoft is positioning as the definitive console experience.

Harnessing the Power of PS5 pro: Key Enhancements

According to Ubisoft’s technology director, Pierre Fortin, the PS5 Pro provides all ingredients to build the definitive console version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The upgraded GPU facilitates improved performance, targeting a stable 60 FPS. Beyond raw performance gains, the update introduces several key graphical enhancements:

  • Ray Tracing Reflections: Implemented in the balanced mode (40 FPS), adding a new layer of realism to the game’s visuals.
  • PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR): Utilized to enhance image quality and reduce visual artifacts.

Fortin notes that the improved global lighting with ray tracing significantly enhances subtle light details. He stated that while the base PS5 offered native ray tracing support, achieving a stable frame rate alongside other GPU-intensive tasks proved challenging. These tasks include simulations, rasterization, shaded geometry, character deformation, and hair rendering.

Already in itself, the fastest GPU of PS5 pro improves performance without developers having to try hard.

Deeper Dive: PSSR and Visual fidelity

Ubisoft highlights thier close collaboration with Sony interactive Entertainment (SIE) to optimize Assassin’s Creed Shadows for the PS5 Pro. This collaboration involved receiving updated models and parameters from Sony, enabling them to fully leverage the console’s capabilities. A key focus was on PSSR, which, according to Ubisoft, delivers a more stable image with fewer bright artifacts compared to Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA), resulting in a noticeable advancement in overall image quality.

When comparing it with Taa, PSSR carries a more stable image with significantly less bright artifacts, which raise the image quality.

  • Performance Mode (60 FPS): Prioritizes frame rate, incorporating ray tracing.
  • Balanced Mode (40 FPS): Aims for a balance between visual fidelity and performance, featuring ray-traced reflections.
  • Fidelity Mode (30 FPS): Focuses on maximum visual quality, with ray-traced reflections.

Ubisoft expresses considerable pride in the Assassin’s Creed Shadows version on PS5 Pro,emphasizing the significant visual and performance enhancements achieved through close collaboration with Sony and the strategic implementation of advanced rendering techniques like ray tracing and PSSR. According to GamesRadar+[[2]], tech analysis suggests Assassin’s Creed Shadows showcases “one of the largest” PS5 Pro upgrades, highlighting “a generational divide in lighting fidelity.”
