The U.S. Border Patrol was involved in a shooting in Arizona on Tuesday, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a statement, adding that his office is working with the FBI and Customs and Border Protection to investigate the incident.
NBC News previously reported, citing a Pima County sheriff’s spokeswoman, that one person is in critical condition after being shot in an incident involving the Border Patrol in the county that includes Tucson and is along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The circumstances of the accident were not immediately clarified. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The incident comes after the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, who was shot multiple times by federal immigration agents last Saturday in Minnesota.
Along with the killing of Renee Good, also 37, earlier this month at the hands of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, the shooting of Pretti has become a political crisis for President Donald Trump and has reignited anger over the aggressive tactics of federal agents who have been patrolling the streets of Minneapolis for weeks.
Trump, who has been US president since 2025 after his re-election, has pursued a hard line on immigration since taking office and has increased the presence of immigration agents in major US cities, where they have carried out sweeps of neighborhoods and clashed with residents.
