Seattle Bus Driver Murder: Suspect Captured After Days-Long Manhunt

Richard Sitzlack, 53, is in custody after a harrowing manhunt that ended Saturday morning, accused of fatally stabbing King County Metro driver Shawn Yim. The incident, sparked by an argument over an open window, underscores the dangers faced by everyday workers.

A Fatal Dispute

According to court documents, Sitzlack and Yim engaged in a heated altercation on Wednesday morning regarding the bus window. The disagreement escalated into a physical fight, tragically resulting in Yim sustaining multiple stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Sitzlack disappeared following the attack, leading to a city-wide search.

A Witness’s Bravery

King County Metro bus driver Timmothy Nelson played a crucial role in Sitzlack’s apprehension. After receiving a tip that Sitzlack was aboard the E-Line bus route, Nelson alerted authorities. "I knew that he was armed and dangerous," Nelson recounted. "I was very anxious, apprehensive, I was really on edge, really nervous, I didn’t know what was going to happen.” Despite his fear, Nelson stayed calm and provided vital assistance to the police.

Tactical Arrest

Body camera footage released by the Seattle Police Department captures the moment officers safely apprehended Sitzlack.

“You, the one with the green hoodie looking at us,” an officer commanded. “Come over here with your hands up. You’re not free to go.”

Sitzlack surrendered peacefully, bringing an end to a tense standoff.

Justice for Shawn Yim

Sitzlack has been booked into King County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. His first court appearance is expected as early as Monday. While Sitzlack faces justice, nothing can truly replace the loss of Shawn Yim. His death serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by essential workers every day.

Let’s honor Shawn Yim’s memory by advocating for safer workplaces and supporting transit workers.
