The head of the British Foreign Office, Yvette Cooper, proposed forming a new mission within NATO called “Arctic Sentinel” to strengthen security measures for Greenland. The minister’s words are quoted by the Politico newspaper.
The material notes that the main idea of the mission is military cooperation and will be aimed at countering Russian threats.
The Foreign Minister said that the idea of the mission is based on similar projects “Eastern Sentinel” and “Baltic Sentinel”. The first was launched after incidents with allegedly Russian drones in Poland. The second was created in 2025 to monitor critical infrastructure using frigates and maritime patrol aircraft.
“We want to see a stronger role for NATO in Arctic security issues,” Cooper added.
She emphasized that security challenges in the Arctic affect a number of NATO member countries, including the UK, Canada, the USA and Norway.
Commenting on previous statements by US President Donald Trump about the potential annexation of Greenland, the minister expressed London’s disagreement with such a course.
“We firmly adhere to the principle of respect for the sovereignty of Greenland as an integral part of Denmark,” concluded the head of the foreign policy department.
The reason for strengthening the presence of NATO countries on the island was the statement by US President Donald Trump that Washington needs Greenland to ensure national security. The American leader emphasized that the United States would take possession of the island one way or another.
