Enhancing Customer Experience with mobile Payment Options
Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), the primary operator of South Korea’s extensive railway network, is now accepting Apple Pay at ticket windows nationwide. This move aims to modernize payment options and cater to the growing number of iPhone users, especially younger travelers, who prefer contactless payment methods.
Apple Pay Integration Across KORAIL Stations
The rollout involves upgrading all point-of-sale terminals across KORAIL’s network to support Near Field Dialogue (NFC) technology, the backbone of Apple Pay transactions. This infrastructure upgrade is not limited to manned ticket counters; KORAIL plans to extend Apple Pay acceptance to automated vending machines by the end of the year, further enhancing convenience for passengers.
This initiative follows the introduction of Apple Pay in South Korea in 2023, initially supported by Hyundai card. As then, Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card have also begun preparations to integrate with the platform, signaling a broader acceptance of Apple Pay within the South korean financial landscape.
Targeting the Tech-Savvy Traveler
KORAIL’s decision is strategically aligned with its customer demographics. Internal data suggests that a significant portion, approximately 40%, of KORAIL’s registered users are iPhone owners. Notably, within this group, over 80% are under the age of 30, highlighting the popularity of Apple devices among younger demographics. By embracing Apple Pay, KORAIL aims to provide a seamless and familiar payment experience for this key segment of its customer base.
Ripple Effect on Public Institutions
As a leading public institution, KORAIL’s adoption of Apple Pay is expected to influence other public sector entities to follow suit. The increased demand for NFC-enabled terminals could accelerate the adoption of contactless payment technologies across various government services and public transportation systems throughout South Korea.

The Rise of Contactless Payments: A Global Trend
KORAIL’s move reflects a broader global trend towards contactless payments. According to a recent report by Statista, the transaction value of mobile payments worldwide is projected to reach $4.78 trillion in 2025. This surge is driven by factors such as increased smartphone penetration, growing consumer preference for convenience, and enhanced security features offered by mobile payment platforms.
In cities like London and New York, contactless payments are already widely used for public transportation, demonstrating the potential for similar adoption rates in South Korea. KORAIL’s initiative positions the company as a forward-thinking organization committed to embracing technological advancements and improving the overall travel experience for its passengers.
