Apple Pages, Numbers, Keynote: Now Freemium

For years, Apple has maintained its own productivity apps completely free on all your devices.

Pages, Numbers, Keynote and, more recently, Freeform they have always represented an exception in the software landscape, offering complete tools without additional costs. This approach, however, is about to change.

With the announcement of Apple Creator Studio, it becomes clear a new model where apps will remain free for their core functions, but smart new features and premium content will only be accessible via subscription.

Apple has not yet provided a complete picture of the new features, but has included the first details in the official presentation of Apple Creator Studio, outlining the perimeter of the new offer:

“Starting from the already well-known potential of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Keynote, Pages, Numbers and, later, Freeform, new intelligent features and unreleased premium content are arriving that make Apple Creator Studio an interesting subscription suite designed to give an edge to the productivity of every type of creator, while protecting privacy at the same time.

With Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform, Apple Creator Studio subscribers have even more ways to express themselves and work with new premium content and smart features available on Mac, iPad and iPhone.”

The message is that Apple Creator Studio will become the container through which the company delivers added value without turning apps into paid tools for everyday use.

Later, Apple goes into more detail about what will be included in the subscriptionshifting the focus above all to creative content:

“The subscription also includes exclusive new templates and themes in Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. ‘Content Hub,’ available through Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, gives Apple Creator Studio subscribers access to the new media library of high-quality content.”

These are therefore templates, themes and multimedia assets designed to enrich presentations, documents and spreadsheets, rather than basic functions related to writing or calculation.

Apple has been explicit on one point: the introduction of premium content will not result in the removal of existing features or the obligation to take out a subscription for standard app use.

“Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform will continue to be free apps, allowing you to create, edit and collaborate with other people too.”

In other words, the current experience should remain unchanged for those who use these apps as traditional productivity tools.
