Apple OLED & Waterproof iPad Mini: What’s Next?

Self-illuminating OLED panels are set to find their way into more Apple devices, starting with the MacBook Pro after next, which will then also receive the M6. OLED will later also be planned for the MacBook Air. Apple wants the iPad Air and iPad mini loudly Bloomberg also convert, the latter should also be waterproof.

MacBook Pro becomes first Mac with OLED

After the Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad Pro and Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s OLED technology will eventually migrate to the MacBook Pro. Initially, an upgrade of the current model to the as yet unannounced M5 Pro and M5 Max is planned for the beginning of next year, before the subsequent, completely new generation of MacBook Pro with chips from the M6 ​​family is scheduled to appear in a thinner chassis. As part of this revision, the switch to OLED displays is also planned.

OLED also for the MacBook Air

These new notebooks could be presented at the end of next year to the beginning of the year after next, i.e. the end of 2026 to the beginning of 2027. The change is said to be loud for the MacBook Air Bloomberg take longer, the switch to OLED is not planned until 2028. Next spring the upgrade to the M5 will take place, but in the familiar chassis and with LCD.

iPad mini with OLED and waterproof case

The company is currently also carrying out tests with tablets, where OLED is intended for the iPad Air and iPad mini. The cheaper basic model in Apple’s tablet portfolio, the simple iPad (test), is still planned to have an LCD from Apple in future generations.

The iPad mini is supposed to start with the tablets below the iPad Pro with M5 (test). The switch to OLED is scheduled for next year. Apple also tested a new housing for the new edition developed under the code name J510, which is waterproof for the first time – like the iPhone. Apple does not yet offer any waterproof or dustproof tablets, even in the high-end segment. Samsung’s tablets, in turn, have been offering IP68 certification since the Galaxy Tab S9 series, which was introduced in 2023. At Apple, the innovations should result in a price that is $100 higher.

The iPad Air will also be updated next year, but not to OLED yet, but initially to the M5 with the familiar screen. A new display with an OLED panel will only be available with a subsequent model.
