As Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) approaches, speculation is mounting about the next MacOS update.The tech community anticipates a major unveiling, with rumors pointing towards significant changes and improvements.

The Mystery of the Next MacOS Name

Apple has a long-standing tradition of assigning names to its MacOS releases, often turning the selection process into a guessing game. Initially, the company used big cat names for Mac OS X. In 2013, with Mavericks, Apple shifted to California-themed names. To maintain secrecy, Apple has been known to register numerous California-related names through shell corporations.

Several registered names remain unused, including California, Condor, Mammoth, Redwood, Rincon, Skyline, Tiburon, and Pacific. Apple has previously used older registrations like Big Sur, suggesting any of these could be chosen for macos 16. Notably, “Tiburon” has already appeared in some marketing materials as a location reference.

Hardware Compatibility: The End of an Era for intel Macs?

The transition away from Intel Macs continues with MacOS 16. Apple finalized its move to Apple Silicon in 2023, and each subsequent macos version has reduced support for older Intel-based machines. Currently, MacOS Sequoia supports select Intel Macs from 2017-2020, including specific MacBook Pro models, the Mac Pro 2019, and iMacs from 2018-2020.

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) becoming increasingly central to Apple’s software strategy, MacOS 16 could be the last update to support Intel Macs. This aligns with Apple’s typical five-year support window, encouraging users to upgrade to Apple Silicon machines capable of handling apple Intelligence functions.

A Major redesign: A New Look for MacOS

MacOS 16 is rumored to feature a significant design overhaul, potentially the most extensive in years. This goes beyond a simple refresh,with Apple planning a complete visual conversion of icons,menus,windows,and system buttons throughout the operating system. The goal is to make the operating system faster, more intuitive, and more consistent with the broader Apple ecosystem.

Internally codenamed “cheer,” the redesign is expected to draw heavily from visionOS, Apple’s operating system for its Vision pro headset. The new user interface will reportedly emphasize transparency and multi-layered elements,subtly receding into the background to highlight content. Floating navigation strips and windows are expected to give the interface a modern, weightless aesthetic.

Enhanced Functionality: Apple Intelligence takes Center Stage

Apple Intelligence is set to expand further with MacOS 16, with improvements to Siri being a key focus.

The “personal context” feature should enable Siri to access and process personal data stored on the device to perform actions more effectively. Siri is also expected to gain the ability to understand screen content and execute relevant tasks. Deeper app integration will allow Siri to perform multi-stage actions across multiple applications.

In addition to existing chatbot integrations, Google Gemini may be integrated for handling Siri inquiries. Furthermore, battery management is expected to become more intelligent, with new AI functions analyzing usage patterns to automatically optimize power consumption.

Improvements to Wi-Fi registration on public networks are also anticipated. When a user registers for a public network on one Apple device (e.g., a Mac), the login data and access will be automatically transferred to their other Apple devices, eliminating the need to repeat the registration process on each device.
