Apple iPhone Camera App Acquisition | Halide Rumors

by drbyos

It turns out that Apple was recently caught “window shopping” for a massive camera upgrade. Reports surfaced that the tech giant was in deep acquisition talks with Lux Optics – the geniuses behind the legendary Halide app, as well as Kino, Specter and Orion – all last year.

The goal? Apple wanted to inject some “professional” DNA directly into the native iPhone Camera app. However, the deal reportedly fell through in September. How why? The founders of Lux Optics made a bet on themselves, believing that the upcoming Halide upgrades would further increase the value of their company. Let’s talk about knowing what you’re worth!

Apple is playing dirty

This failed business is part of a much larger trend. Apple seems to be tired of slow, incremental growth and is now using its huge pile of cash to take “shortcuts” Instead of building everything from scratch, they’re playing a little dirty and trying to buy competitors and their technology to stay ahead of rivals.

Apple’s 2026 shopping list so far:

  • MotionVFX: Apple recently acquired this plugin powerhouse to power its new “Creator Studio” suite and Final Cut Pro.
  • Q.ai: To sharpen the inner brains of Vision Pro and AirPods, this Israeli AI startup was thrown $2 billion earlier this year.

With a variable aperture lens rumored to be coming to the iPhone 18 Pro this fall, Apple is desperate for software that can actually handle this kind of hardware. Buying Lux Optics would have been the ultimate “easy button” for a pro-level camera interface.

Although Halide has remained independent, the message is clear: Apple’s mission is to dominate the “Creator” space, whether through innovation or its checkbook.

It’s only three months into the year and Apple is already moving fast. With their current “buy first, ask later” energy, could Apple’s acquisition list hit double digits by the end of 2026?
