Apple Inc. Ceases Production of First-Generation Vision Pro Headset Amid Sales Flop

Apple Inc. might have halted production of the Vision Pro headset, marking a significant downturn for the company’s foray into the mixed reality market. The decision to potentially cease production comes after reports indicated weakening consumer interest and soft sales figures.

The Vision Pro’s Struggles

The Vision Pro, unveiled in June 2023, aimed to revolutionize spatial computing. Apple’s high hopes were pinned on the headset, with projections ranging from 500,000 to 800,000 units sold in its debut year. However, the reality fell short, with sales totaling around 420,000 units.

This performance is a stark contrast to the launch numbers of other Apple products. The first-generation iPhone sold 1.39 million units in its launch year, while the iPad surpassed 15 million units. Such figures highlight the significant market gap the Vision Pro struggled to bridge.

Production Cuts and Potential Future

According to reports, Apple reportedly began scaling back production in the summer of 2024. By October, assembly company Luxshare Precision Co. Ltd. was assembling around 1,000 units per day, a sharp decline from peak production numbers. Apple officials allegedly informed Luxshare that they would need to reduce production further, with plans potentially ending in November 2024.

Despite the cutbacks, Apple hasn’t dismantled the production lines, leaving the door open for a resurgence if demand picks up. However, given current sales and tepid consumer interest, a revival seems unlikely.

Price Strategy and Content Limitations

The Vision Pro’s premium price point of $3,499 was a significant factor in its underperformance. Even among dedicated Apple fans, this high cost was a barrier to purchase. Furthermore, the limited content ecosystem available for the headset did not entice many users.

Apple’s Commitment to Mixed Reality

While the present Vision Pro iteration might be a disappointment, Apple remains committed to the mixed reality market. Rumors and reports suggest that new versions of the headset, possibly including a lower-cost model, are in the works. These potential updates aim to address the shortcomings of the current device by offering broader appeal and possibly a reduced price point.
